• Tailpipe: Your exhaust emissions exit the vehicle through your tailpipe; over time water, road treatments, and debris can slowly eat away at your tailpipe or damage your tailpipe.
• Muffler: As the name implies, this device fits over the tailpipe to quiet or “muffle” the noise from your exhaust. The muffler can be damaged by water, debris and road treatments.
• Exhaust Pipe: This component is the front portion of your tailpipe. It is here that the cleaner gas from your engine enters the tailpipe to be expelled out the back of the vehicle.
• Catalytic Converter: The purpose of this exhaust system component is to convert toxins from your exhaust system (CO₂) or Carbon Dioxide and water to cleaner emissions. Though CO₂ is still poisonous in small, confined spaces, CO₂ is a naturally occurring greenhouse gas and in large open spaces, this gas is relatively harmless. Some vehicles have oxygen sensors located in the catalytic converter to monitor oxygen levels, and many others have these sensors located after the converter. In both cases, the oxygen levels track the performance of the vehicle.
• Combustion Chamber: Where air and fuel mix together to allow for internal combustion, this mixture is ignited with a spark from the spark plugs to cause the micro explosions that release energy to power your vehicle. When this powerful chemical reaction occurs exhaust fumes are generated.
• Piston and Exhaust Valve: These engine parts channel the exhaust fumes from the combustion chamber to go to the exhaust manifold.
• Exhaust Manifold: This is where exhaust travels from the pistons to the catalytic converter.

How Often Does My Exhaust Need to be Replaced?
