How Do You Fix an Alternator?
Most drivers don’t think about their alternator until there is a problem getting a vehicle started, but there is a close relationship between your alternator, starter, and battery. The starter depends on the battery to work, the alternator depends on the starter, and the battery needs the alternator to stay charged, though there are a few other steps in the process.
If we test the battery and find it to be healthy, we will run other tests of the starter system components, including the ignition switch, drive belts, spark plugs, and so on until we figure out where the problem lies. If the problem turns out to be the alternator, we will advise you of the issue and provide recommendations on how we would like to proceed to get you back on the road again, whether replacement is needed, or if there are any repair options.
Common Signs of Alternator Issues
If you want to have a better idea as to if the issue is related to your alternator, here are some things you can look for:
- Dashboard light warnings: You may see a check engine light, or a battery light illuminated on your dash. While these lights come on when you start the engine, you need to pay attention to if they stay lit.
- Driving at night and you notice lights are weak or dim: This becomes clearer if you notice the lights get brighter when your RPMs increase.
- Other electrical issues: Your alternator generates power for all your vehicle’s electrical systems. If there are other electrical malfunctions, it can mean alternator trouble.
- Weird noises: Squealing sounds can mean a problem with an alternator pulley or belt while grinding or growling sounds can indicate a problem with your alternator’s internal bearings.
- Odors of burning: A burning smell can also indicate a problem with the alternator belt or pulley.
- If your battery is healthy but is still losing a charge: If you try to jump-start the vehicle and it will not accept a charge, there’s a bigger issue than a dead battery. Always have the battery tested first to rule out a problem before replacing it.
