What Does the Cooling System Service Include?
Cooling system service begins with an inspection of each of the components, such as belts and hoses. A diagnostic is performed before any repairs are made, so we can see how well your cooling system is working. The diagnostic will tell us if you are having problems with cooling system components like your radiator, a failing thermostat, low coolant levels, or some other component. In step-by-step order you can expect the following when you bring your vehicle in for service:
- Inspection of radiator, thermostat, water pump, head gasket, heater core, control valve, hoses, belts, and fans.
- Check for worn elements, cracks, and leaks.
- Check coolant volume and pressure conditions.
- Flush and dispose of old coolant fluid.
- Install replacement parts as needed.
- Refill the coolant system with coolant fluid.
How Often Should I Get a Coolant System Flush?
There isn’t an expiration date for antifreeze, but over time the fluid will begin to deteriorate and become less effective. Your owner’s manual will usually provide a recommended schedule of mileage intervals to change your coolant, but it can range from 30,000-120,000 miles. Since there is a lot of variation between makes and models, the best practice is to check your manual.
If you start to notice any of the following signs, you may want to schedule an appointment with Mark Christopher Auto Center to have your coolant system checked out.
Signs That a Coolant Flush May Be Needed
- Engine overheats: If you see steam coming out from under your hood frequently, you probably need new engine coolant (which is antifreeze and water in a 50-50 ratio).
- High temperatures: If your temperature gauge shows high temps, you probably need service.
- Sweet, maple syrup smell: You might think someone’s cooking breakfast nearby, but it’s your cooling system. The smell is caused by antifreeze being burned up by the engine.
- Fluid leaks: This fluid is usually green or orange, but other colors are possible. Look for puddles beneath your vehicle.
