Diagnosing Headlight Issues

Most headlight problems are related to bulbs burning out. This is usually a simple fix that a new bulb will take care of, but occasionally there are other reasons for headlight trouble like electrical problems and charging issues. Sometimes knowing what’s wrong depends on which lights are having problems and what the specific problem could indicate.

• If both headlights stop working: If this happens, it is likely a problem with the electrical system.
• If high beams or low beams stop working: The first step is to rule out burned-out bulbs. If that doesn’t fix the problem, you’ll want to have someone check fuses and relays.
• If a light stops working: It’s probably a bad bulb, but if that doesn’t work, have fuses and wiring checked.
• If headlights are dim: If your lights turn on and off as they should but the light is dimmer than usual, the problem might be the charging system. It may be a simple fix like cleaning the lenses.
